Dota 2 — Your First Two Weeks
Denying, the invisible uphill miss chance, and why passive gold means a bad lane is not a lost game.
You earn gold for existing
Every player passively receives 1 reliable gold every 0.67 seconds from the moment the clock starts — roughly 90 gold per minute.
This is unusual among MOBAs and it changes what a losing lane feels like. Even a disastrous first ten minutes leaves you with about 900 gold you did nothing to earn. You are never at zero, and a bad lane is not a lost game.
Denying is the mechanic that separates Dota
You can attack your own units to stop the enemy taking the gold and experience from them. The thresholds:
- Creeps and siege units can be denied below 50% health
- Heroes below 25%, and only under certain debuffs
- Towers below 10%
Denying a creep is worth roughly as much as last-hitting one, because it takes from them exactly what it gives you. Most new players spend fifty games ignoring the deny entirely and wondering why the enemy carry is so far ahead.
The terrain lies to you
Attacking from low ground up to high ground carries a 25% miss chance.
Nothing on screen tells you a shot missed because of elevation rather than luck, which is what makes it so punishing to learn. It is why ranged heroes want high ground for last hitting, and why pushing uphill into a defended position loses even with equal numbers.
Creep equilibrium is the other half of lane control. On the safe lane, creeps meet roughly halfway between the Tier 1 and Tier 2 towers, and where that point sits decides whose half of the map the fight happens on.
Roshan
Killing Roshan gives every player on the killing team 135 unreliable gold, and whoever lands the killing blow takes a random bonus of 200–290 on top — so 335 to 425 for the finisher.
He also gets harder with time: his damage increases by 10 every minute from the first creep spawn. An early Roshan attempt is a genuinely different fight from a late one.
The first fortnight
- Last hit and deny. Practise both — the deny is half the mechanic and most beginners skip it.
- Take high ground for last hitting. The 25% uphill miss is real and invisible.
- Do not tilt at a bad lane. Passive gold means you are still accumulating.
- Learn 2 or 3 heroes, not twenty. Dota's depth is per-hero.
- Watch the creep equilibrium. Where the wave sits decides where you can safely stand.
Where this comes from
The numbers here were read from these pages on September 5, 2026. Games patch, and a guide is only as current as the last time somebody checked it — so if something below disagrees with what you see in game, the game is right.
